The topic of "relational databases" usually plays a central role. Relational database systems were created in order to be able to map a hierarchical structure in tables. The most important database system for us is PostgreSQL. We have been using this database since 2003 because it has proven itself for processing tables with a complex structure and storing large amounts of data. PostgreSQL, often also called Postgres, is a free, object-relational and extensible database management system (OR DBMS). An OR DBMS creates a connection between a classic, relational database and an object database. One advantage of this open source database is its very good downward compatibility. The data records are stored in individual databases or projected tables. This makes it possible to map and manage a very complex structure that also allows queries for demanding applications. There are hardly any limits to the amount of data. The size of the entire database is not restricted. The database system allows individual tables to contain up to 32 TB of data records. Schemas, tables and functions can be created during configuration. Users have access to a comparatively extensive collection of tools for analyzing data records and defining queries. Access to the contents of the database is regulated by extensive user rights management. SQL queries and the storage of data records are therefore secure and controlled. Postgres also allows the use of external extensions that further increase the scope and flexibility of the relational database. For example, the PostGIS extension is very well suited for use with geodata.
We are not only experts in dealing with PostgreSQL, we also have many years of experience with MySQL/MariaDB and the Semantic MediaWiki as a No SQL database. We ideally implement your projects in Go (Golang) and Python. In addition, with almost 20 years of individual experience, we also develop in the languages PHP, Java (JEE), JavaScript and C/C++. The relatively new browser technology WebAssembly (WASM) receives our attention, especially for new projects. It offers enormous advantages for extremely high-performance visualization tasks.
The comparatively short lifespan of conventional hard drives and other common storage media, as well as the constantly growing storage density and the resulting increased probability of errors, represent a high risk of data and therefore information loss for database systems. Software ecosystems are also sometimes very fast-moving - formats commonly used today are often obsolete in a few years and can only be managed with effort. Migrations from source databases to target databases are often very time-consuming and therefore costly. Therefore, switching to a long-lasting open source database can also be a strategically important step towards data security. In this way, access to aging databases is guaranteed even in the long term. As long as the data records of a table in a database can be exported, practically all databases can be reconstructed - regardless of the front end.
